Ready to Climb 2015
By Megan Capuano The Ready To Climb program used place-based learning and service learning to engage ten incoming 4th grade boys in academic, social, and physical activities over the summer. The boys previewed some 4th grade math and science standards and then applied those standards with activities on the Appalachian Trail.
Some activities included reading maps, estimating distances and elevations, collecting trash along the trail, and creating presentations. The boys met at the school every week throughout the summer and hiked over 12 miles of the Appalachian Trail.

Frank Little Bear Program
This authentic Native American Program is an ongoing educational presentation funded each school year by the Bubbler Foundation.
Professor Frank Little Bear of the Cree Nation Tribe spends 2 days at W. G. Rice Elementary in November. He meets individually with all of the second grade classrooms and presents artifacts, artwork, and authentic clothing from his tribe. He concludes each visit with a 1 hour assembly that permits all 180+ second grade students the opportunity to participate in the Cree Nation music and dance activities.
